August 2021

Although I technically released my first ever video in May 2016, it wasn’t until August of the same year that I really started taking it seriously and attempting to release weekly content. This month, then, marks five years of No Nonsense Whisky and what a half decade its been!

I usually like to take a moment when contemplating these milestones and say a massive thank you to all my fans, viewers, supports and friends for continuing to watch my little slice of the internet. I can’t wait to see where the channel takes me over the next five years, but one thing you can be sure of is I’ll be taking you all along with me!

On to this months whisky then. It was business as usual here, no special celebrations to mark the anniversary of the channel, so we have four different whiskies to draw from.

In any case, as usual, I will list the runners up for this months accolade in order of release and finish up with the winner below.

Runners Up

First up this month is the Old Balluntruan NAS. Distilled at the usually very unpeated Tomintoul, this one came as a complete surprise to me. I hadn’t even heard of the brand before trying one in a zoom tasting with Angus Dundee. Needless to say, I bought a bottle right there.

One thing I would impress on you at this point is, this came second place to the winner this month. If you’re into your peat in any way, this is cheap enough to give a go and should be available around the world. I very much recommend it.

Next up is the ‘entry’ to the Glen Moray range, the Elgin Classic.

Usually on the shelf for around £20-25 in the UK, it can often be found for much less. But don’t let the low price fool you. This one punches way above it weight and is better than many single malts that push up into the £25-30 bracket.

If you’ve overlooked this, or any of the Glen Moray range, in the past then I would urge you to take the plunge and give em a shot. You’ll be surprised

Lastly then, another budget whisky in the Tamnavulin Double Cask.

Again, often overlooked due it’s low price tag. And yes, just like the Glen Moray above, it’s 40%, added colour and chill filter. But who says that has to be a bad thing, especially when the price is right.

Double again, this won’t light anyones world on fire. It is what it is, but it’s solid for its price category. Another one to try when you see it on deal at xmas time.

Top Dog

This months winner is brand new Firkin Rare Ledaig 2008.

You’ll have to watch my video to hear more about the awesome lengths gone to to create this incredible whisky but the take homes are, this is Ledaig aged in a specially built cask that’s been seasoned with Marsala wine.

It’s peat, so if that’s not your bag then you probably won’t enjoy this so much, BUT if you do like peat then this is absolutely stunning.

It’s a limited release, so if you’re interested in it, make sure you grab your bottle now
