February 2021
We’re coming up on almost a year of lockdowns, but it looks like the haze might actually be clearing and maybe, just maybe, we might be able to meet with real people again.
For NNW, its a crazy start to the year, lots of awesome things happening including hitting a massive 10k subscribers on YouTube and organising a huge taste-a-long livestream to celebrate. There’s also another surprise just around the corner too!
We’re not here to talk about any of that though, let have a look which whisky won this month.
As always, I’ll go through the runners up before announcing the winner at the end.
Runners Up
First up this month is the venerable Dalwhinnie 15 Years. In fairness, this is a very dependable dram. Consistent year on year and still providing excellent value for money. Ultimately, it’s not the most interesting whisky, and it’s easily overshadowed by better quality whisky. Recommended for a daily sipper.
Next up is the Whisky Works King of Trees. A really interesting whisky that’s been part finished in native Scottish oak. Although it’s sister bottle The Quartermaster won December’s whisky of the month last year, this one didn’t quite fit the bill for this month. But it may well have won it another month if the competition hadn’t been so good. Definitely a top quality dram and interesting to try if you’re into strange cask types.
An honourable mention should go to Armitage Cognacs Grande Champagne 2005. It’s not whisky, so it couldn’t with the monthly award. But its still a fantastic distilled spirit and well worth your time if you’re into Cognacs at all.
Top Dog
The winner then is the Montgomerie’s Highland Park 1994. I wouldn’t usually give a limited release from an Indie bottler the top spot, but in this case it’s still available (affiliate link). At £150 for a 21yr Highland Park, how can it not be my top pick of the month.
