January 2021
Welcome to 2021. The less said about 2020, the better.
Looking forward to the coming year, I’ll carrying on with my usual whisky of the month format with a final winner being chosen from the winner of each month at the end of the year. And, as always, I welcome comments and thoughts below!
January was a little slow for NNW. I started the year a little slowly as I bought a new camera over the holiday period and wanted to wait until I had it before starting up content creation again. As such, I released three reviews in the month. Oddly, all three this month will be extremely hard or impossible to get a hold of for pretty much anyone but it is what it is!
Just like last year, I’ll talk about the runners up first with the winner being below. You can check out my full reviews of them by clicking the links in the text.
The first honourable mention this month goes to Beach Hut Man, a private cask Mackmyra bottling. Although I was really impressed with this whisky, I had to take it out of the running for WotM as it isn’t commercially available at all being that all of it belongs to one man. That said, it’s a really interesting whisky as its fully matured in a full Swedish oak barrel.
Second runner up is The Macallan Edition 6. I went into this review with a really low expectation. Having tried a couple of the editions in the past, and not liking them much, I had resigned myself to properly not liking this one much either. To my surprise, I found this to actually rather nice and drinkable. A shame then that the majority of people who bought it will not open it in favour of leaving it on a shelf in the hope it might one day be worth something. This bottle came my way via Mark Littler who focuses on investments and such like, check out his take on the Ed 6 here. The price of this thing put it out of the running for me, even if I did like the liquid.
The winner then is a Glasgow 1770 Summerton Exclusive. While this is, again, something no one outside the club will be able to get, it showcases the quality that is coming out of the Glasgow Distillery and has really put them on my radar. I’m definitely keen to check them out further and should, hopefully, be bringing some reviews to the channel soon so watch this space!
